Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Mandated Neuropsychological Evaluations
The FAA may require an FAA evaluation when a pilot candidate, active pilot, air traffic control candidate, or active air traffic controller reports a neurological, psychiatric, or brain-based medical condition during an aviation medical exam.
The type of testing needed for an FAA evaluation depends on the diagnosis and the FAA’s specific requirements. Conditions may include ADHD, autism, psychiatric disorders, or neurological conditions.
Dr. Robb Mapou has completed FAA-mandated evaluations for more than 10 years. He specializes in evaluating pilot candidates, pilots, air traffic control candidates, and air traffic controllers with ADHD, autism, psychiatric disorders, and neurological conditions.
Dr. Mapou also works closely with Peter J. Lambrou, M.D., a Senior Aviation Medical Examiner at the Center for Aviation Medicine in Pittsburgh, PA. He receives referrals from aviation medical examiners and from candidates who find him through his listing on the FAA website.
Dr. Mapou holds CogScreen-AE and Basic HIMS certifications, which the FAA requires for these evaluations. In 2019, the FAA appointed him as a Special Medical Consultant to the Federal Air Surgeon in neuropsychology.
In this role, Dr. Mapou reviews submitted evaluations and provides input on the development and revision of FAA neuropsychological testing protocols.
